Land geese were bred in France in the early twentieth century, based on Toulouse geese. In the Soviet Union the land breed of geese was introduced for the first time 40 years ago. The main purpose of breeding: the meat of this particular bird is the basis of an exquisite and very expensive dish made from goose liver “foie gras”
Appearance of the Lands geese is very remarkable and it can not be confused with any other breed: smoothly bending body in the form of a “boat”, quite wide with characteristic protruding fat folds – “bags”; thick and long neck, on which rests a large head with a slightly pronounced knob above the nose, short legs
The upper back and neck have brown or dark gray color scaly tones, abdomen of birds of white color. Geese with a second variant of feathering became widespread, very rarely in the nature there is a white breed of land geese. The maximum weight of adult geese reaches eight kg, geese – 7 kg
Have a good egg production: one female per season is able to sit out up to 40 eggs, although the instinct of a hen in goose is rather weakly expressed. If the goal is to increase the offspring, then the “mothers” need eyes and eyes! At the same time, the average weight of one egg reaches 0.2 kg! The output of goslings is not the largest – no more than sixty percent, but more often and not more than 50%. The safety in the first two and a half months is no more than 85%. But with good fattening young geese already at the age of 10 weeks can weigh up to 5 kilograms! So, the most valuable thing for the geese of the Lands is their huge in relation to the whole body of the liver – usually it reaches 10% of the total mass! The average weight of the liver is 700-720g. Is an extremely high value. Although the Landing geese also have average performance indicators, they are very “trying”: birds are very loving, so they are regularly crossed for industrial production with Italian, Rhine and Hungarian geese. This leads to the appearance of up to 80 powerful and well-developed goslings
Live weight of the bird can reach almost 10 kg, and the liver – 800 gr. Males by nature are very arrogant and zealously guarding their family from strangers and offenders. They bravely go into battle, if there is a special need. Feathers fly in all directions! By the way, when plucking one carcass falls down to 400 gr. pen, this is enough for the stuffing of one pillow.
