Many breeds of geese, including geese of the Wishtens breed, were obtained by means of a complex reproduction of a cross between several breeds. The Wishtens were first brought to the territory of modern Lithuania by crossing local Lithuanian geese with Pomeranian and Emden geese.
This breed was not widely spread in Europe and Russia, but in Lithuania and Latvia these geese, due to the following characteristic features, are extremely popular:
1. The feather cover is white, occasionally hornets with gray or gray-clay feathers are born;
2. Color of paws and beak – bright, orange;
3. The eyes of the birds are brown, very large;
4. The carcass is medium, wide, horizontal;
5. Chest large, distinctly convex;
6. The stomach of the goose is collected in folds – usually 2-3;
7. The neck is elongated, beautifully curved;
8. Goose head is round, small;
9. Legs of medium length;
10. The beak is short, straight.
Weight geese wishtens can reach 6.5 kilograms, this weight geese already reach 3-4 months of life. This breed is grown to obtain a large amount of liver, the mass fraction of which reaches with a good fattening of 400 grams, whereas the weight of the liver of a normal goose does not exceed 80 grams.
Goose can kill up to 40 eggs in one egg-laying season, each of which can reach a weight of 170-180 grams. Unfortunately, this breed did not show good results with natural breeding, out of 100% of eggs only 60% turn out to be fertilized and suitable for obtaining offspring. Young people are often sick, statistics show that not more than 75% of all hatching geese can be saved.
The quality of meat is high, in addition, geese are easily fattened, and geese breed eggs well, differing from other breeds, in a calm temper.
Young goslings enter the active phase of growth by the age of a month, eating everything that they are given as food, namely:
– Mushrooms from cereals and greens;
– grated vegetables and fruits;
– sliced greens of dandelions, plantain and clover.
Particularly useful for geese are wet buns, which contribute to quick weight gain. The composition of the sticks can include corn, wheat, boiled barley, water and greens. Mashrooms need to be cooked in an amount sufficient for a one-time distribution. It is not recommended to store mushrooms, they can become sour and cause severe poisoning, which may not immediately appear, but become the cause of the development of viral and infectious diseases in the future. All feed should be exceptionally fresh and soft, you need to carefully monitor the fact that the feeders do not get large pieces of vegetables and fruits that birds can easily choke. Soak the grain beforehand for several hours in the water.
Like geese of other breeds, the vishtens moult twice a year, dropping most of the soft plumage of high quality. Feathers and down of geese after careful processing is for sale. It should be noted that in order to collect a cleaner fluff, farmers growing on an industrial scale, on the eve of molting, manually pluck feathers, which virtually eliminates the need for further cleaning of the product before sale.
Slaughter of geese is carried out in 5-6 months, after birds reach the maximum weight for them and stop moving. Readiness of geese to slaughter is determined by their fat content and weight, geese that do not reach the above mentioned indices do not go to slaughter, their fattening continues with further change of the forage base. After slaughtering and cutting the carcass, at least 78% of pure meat and 13% of fat are obtained
