Origin of the breed
Depending on the properties laid down by genetics, the breeds of chickens are divided into egg, meat, and decorative. The ancestors of the Poltava chicken breed were presented as exhibits in Poltava. The event took place in 1895. In 1928, an excellent egg-laying level was found, a hundred was about a hundred eggs per chicken. Further active development of poultry farming caused a decrease in the number and quality of the breed of chickens.
To save the Poltava breed from the Karlovsky and Mirgorod districts of the region, chickens that were involved in the process of restoring the representatives were delivered. As a result of the selection measures, several breeds were distinguished, which are distinguished by the color of the feathers: zazulist, black, clayey.
Species of the breed
Poltava black was common in the Lubny district. In our time, the individuals of this subspecies of the Poltava breed have practically disappeared, but the poultry farmers are actively working to restore it.
Poltava zazulistaya was withdrawn simultaneously with Poltava black. Unfortunately, this subspecies of chickens is also defined as disappeared.
Only one subspecies of the rock is actively cultivated: clayey. These chickens are bred to provide the population with food. These birds are local in the zone of the Ukrainian forest-steppe zone. According to the assumptions, the birds were bred in the XIX century, crossing representatives of local chickens with such breeds as New Hampshire, Wyandot, Orpington and others.
In the 20th century, poultry scientists were actively working on improving the breed. The collapse of the Soviet Union had a negative impact on the state of production, which led to a reduction in the number of birds, and also led to a deterioration in the quality of the breed. Thus, the described rock is not in the best condition.
According to the order of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, since 2007 the clayey rock has been declared as an egg-meat category.
Representatives differ in the yellow color of the pen with dark or light shades. The edges of the flight feathers, as well as the feathers of the tail, have a black edging. The head of a medium-sized bird. The bill is not long, it is painted in a light brown color. Eye color is yellow or orange. The wings do not protrude, but snug against the body. The chest is convex, the neck of the chickens is powerful enough.
The legs of the birds are characterized by a yellow coloration, widely set, without feathering. The wings of the cock are distinguished by a rich yellow color of the feather. Neck plumage is golden in color. A rooster can have both a rose-shaped and leaf-shaped five-toothed crest. The central feathers of the tail are black with a green tint.
Breeding and bird care of the Poltava breed
In 1970, tests were carried out, which made it possible to confirm the fact that chickens are highly resilient in comparison with representatives of other breeds. Birds are unpretentious in the care and adapt quickly enough. When breeding chickens, heat should be provided to the chicks. Chickens do not require specialized feed, but the food should be balanced.
Courses can be planted in both common henhouses and specially equipped cages.
For breeding in the henhouse, a systematic change of the floor covering should be ensured. For a bedding, dry peat, straw or sawdust is optimal. Excessive moisture leads to the appearance of bacteria that cause illness in birds. Therefore, peat will serve as an ideal coating, which will remove excess moisture from the feet of birds and protect them from diseases. In cells, waste products immediately fall into containers under the cells. Access to water should be somewhat limited in order to prevent increased moisture in the cell. To ensure heat it is worth buying several lamps.
Birds require walks in the open courtyard. If this condition is not met, stones should be added to the diet. In the cold season, you can eat twice. It is desirable that the food is mild in the morning, and in the evening it contains cereals.
