The breed Pietren was formed in the early twentieth century in Belgium. It was deduced by means of reproductive cross. For crossing, native pigs, Yorkshire and other breeds were used. The presented breed belongs to the meat direction. In order to consolidate the valuable qualities of meat production used closely related crosses. Especially popular this breed is used in Europe, Belgium, Holland, France, etc.
Animals breeds of pietren have a well-developed muscle mass, especially it concerns hams, a well-built skeleton and excellent meat forms. The body of the pigs of this breed is short and sweeping, has a formylindra. The head of the pig owns a light skull, a straight profile and small ears. The depth of the chest is not sufficiently developed, but the chest is rather wide. The muscles in the back are well developed. Pig ribs with pronounced curvature, hams perfectly filled, descending to the level of the hock. The flanks are round in shape. The suits of pigs distinguish between variegated and white.
A mature boar can easily gain weight to two hundred and sixty kilograms, and a sow up to two hundred forty kilograms. Sows breed Pietren can not boast of numerous farrowing. One litter usually consists of about eight piglets. But, given the low level of milk, the sow is able to feed no more than six pigs. In addition, sows of this breed have an underdeveloped maternal instinct.
Piglets are distinguished not by a high rate of growth and development, but they have increased viability. Being on the meat fattening, gilt can gain weight, equal to a hundred kilograms for eight months. If we compare pietrenov with landrace, also referring to the meat direction, landrace can gain a hundred kilograms in only six months. In a day the weight gain of pietrenes is about five hundred grams. Meat in the carcass is about 60 percent, fat is almost thirty, and the weight of one ham is eight to nine kilograms.
Pietrenas, like many other animals, are extremely whimsical in content. They have very poor ability to acclimatize. They are equally sensitive to both high temperature and cold conditions. Balanced feeding is the key to optimal growth and development of young and adult pietrenas. A balanced diet for weight gain is very important. If the food is wrong, then the gains will be small. Most purebred pietrenes are not stress-resistant.
An important difference of the presented breed is its inability to obesity, which is embedded in the genes. If, on the other hand, the pietrain of pigs of meat and sebaceous type is selected from the breed, cross them, then only the offspring of the meat direction will be obtained. In the Myrhorod and North Caucasian breeds of pigs for the breeding of special lines of meat direction, it is precisely the boars of pietrene.
In addition, with their help, many domestic breeds of animals were created. Crossing pietrenas and landrace will result in a very early ripening, and a combination of pietren – duroc will provide litter with high quality meat products.
Every year the popularity of pietrene only grows. To date, the breed is actively used in industrial pig production, in order to improve meat products. The most popular is the combination of pietrena with landrace and a large white breed of pigs.
