Mirror rock appeared as a result of hybridization of khaki-kempbell and Peking ducks with local species. It was able to breed in the fifties of the XX century to breeders from the Kuchinsky poultry farm in the Moscow region. The main goal was to get ducks with high vitality and meat of excellent quality. Therefore, the experimental subjects were kept under severe conditions at a low temperature and birds were selected with a high level of productivity.

This breed is named because of the dark blue mirror reflection of the feathers on the wings. The main color of the bird is light brown. The head and neck of the drake has a black-brown hue with a strong green tint, bordered by a white collar. The bill is yellowish green, ending in black.

Ducks are distinguished by a lighter color of plumage, often individuals with almost white color. Head and neck of yellow color, wings almost white, with a brilliant blue tint. In females the beak is gray or light brown.

The legs of the birds are orange and medium in length. The body is roller-like, rather wide and long. The head is also more oval than round. The neck is not long, slightly curved. The back is wide, slightly elevated from the front. The breast of mirrored ducks is rounded and slightly protruded forward. Characteristic of this breed is the absence of keel-shaped formation. Wings fit well to the body. The tail is narrow and short.

Mirror ducks are considered one of the most productive species among meat-egg breeds. Providing them with proper care and properly balanced nutrition can achieve good fertility. This breed is characterized by good egg production and high survival rates among chicks, rapid ripening of young animals.

The meat of this bird is lean, soft and tasty. The drake’s weight reaches 3,000-3,500 grams, ducks 2,800-3,000 g. Two months of ducklings gain about two kilograms. The edible part of the carcass is 64%.

Oviposition in ducks begins at 5 months. One egg on average weighs 80 g. For 9 months you can collect 115-130 eggs. In some cases, layers can bring up to 200 pieces per year. Usually masonry begins in March and ends in July, but sometimes occurs in other months. Mirror ducks are excellent hens, they hatch eggs well and take care of chicks.

Conditions for keeping ducks.

In general, the birds of this breed are mobile, unpretentious, strong. But, despite all the positive aspects of breeding, this breed has not become very widespread among the breeders. Mirror ducks in small quantities can be found on the farm in poultry-lovers.

Although this breed is enduring, it is necessary to ensure that the temperature in the house does not drop below 0 ° C. The most profitable way to grow mirror ducks is to use free-range. It is convenient if there is a pond near the site. This will save on feed and promotes the full development of young animals. The diet of this breed of ducks in the summer season should almost consist of a different kind of herbs. In the pond they feed on duckweed and other algae.

Depending on the purpose for which birds are raised (for meat or eggs), the intensity and composition of the feed should be selected. In the morning the pack is expelled to the paddock to the pond where it finds food. For dinner, ducks are driven into the poultry house to receive food enriched with the necessary components for weight gain components. Then again released on the pond. In the evening, after the corral they should be fed again. It is advisable to do this at the same time. After a while mirror ducks get used to this mode and independently come to the pen to feed and spend the night.
