The horses of the Kustanaic breed are widely known, first of all, in Russia and on the territory of the former Soviet Union countries, where they were bred in the early 30s of the last century. The breeding of the new breed was carried out by the Kustanai stud farm, where in the early 1920s they began to cross different purebred horses in order to obtain a new breed. Two completely different ways of keeping and rearing young animals were used: 1. Stables and pastures; 2. Cultural-herd
The first method of growing provided for the maintenance of horses in summer in pastures, and in winter in stables of stables, sometimes in warm winters, horses were allowed to be taken to pastures, and frequent fertilizing with hay and concentrates was introduced. The horses were handled by hand, the young ones were taken from mares at the age of 6-7 months
The second method of growing provided for the constant maintenance of horses in pastures, in the stables the herds were driven only in case of severe weather – rain, snow, snowstorm. A mating was conducted, the horses were fed heavily with hay and concentrated fodder
Such a double way of keeping allowed to distinguish two intra-breed types of horses – horses intended solely for riding and animals that are more prone to freedom-loving – steppe
Horse horses of the Kustanai breed were used on horse races, for their breeding a seed of purebred horses of the best breeds was used. When breeding steppe horses were allowed crossbreeds with non-thoroughbred horses, as well as animals of other breeds, interbreeding was used, which allowed preserving valuable qualities and features of the breed within one herd
