Kulundinskaya sheep breed

History of the origin of the breed Kulundinskaya fine-wool sheep was created in the Altai Territory on the basis of the tribal plant “Stepnoe” relatively recently, in the period from 1991 to 2007. The breed was created with the help of reproductive crossbreeding of aboriginal Altai breeds and rams of Grozny breed, as well as Australian and Manych merino

The Kulundin breed, due to its “youth”, does not yet have much recognition, but enjoys great appreciation among the population of the northern regions of Russia. Kulunda fine wool sheep are currently bred in Siberia, as well as in the Chelyabinsk region, the republic of Bashkortostan and the Altai Territory. Adapted to the climate of Siberia, these animals do not tolerate high air temperature and humidity. Characteristics of the breed Kulundinskie sheep are woolly-meat direction. They are distinguished by a strong constitution, displaced to a coarser type, a lot of weight and not a bad adaptation to the climate of the Siberian region. Kulunda sheep are strong and hardy

Distinctive features are hanging ears, and high quality, as well as a wide thoracic part with a large accumulation of fat here. The sheep do not have horns, the rams have big enough horns. The color of the sheep of this breed varies from black to brown

Productivity The representatives of the Kulunda breed are characterized by a high living mass. Sheep often reach a weight of 100-130 kg, a sheep from 65 to 82 kg. Slaughter yield for meat is 52-62%. The Kulunda sheep differs from its brethren in high-cutting wool. The woolen productivity of these sheep is: from rams from 12 to 16 kg, from queens to 7 kg of unrefined wool. The yield of pure sheep wool ranges between 55-58%

The length of the rune hair from the sheep is from 10 to 11 cm, the sheep are slightly below 9-9.5 cm. The tonnage of the fibers of the wool of this breed is within the range of 21-25μ. The wool of these sheep is distinguished by good uniformity and high quality. The fleece has a mowing structure with a different tortuosity of the braids from small curls to a large tortuosity, as well as straight hair

Reproduction Kulundinskaya sheep is distinguished not by bad early maturity and rather high fertility – in the region of 155-160%. Uterine Kulundinskoy breed on average for lambing brings 1 or 2 lambs. They are born with a weight of 2.5 to 3kg. The individuals of this breed are characterized by a rapid increase in mass. Lambs are added in weight on the average on 300-500g, thanks to milk productivity of ewes, which during lactation reaches approximately 100kg

The new Kulundin sheep was noticeably in demand. Today, a herd of Kulunda fine-fleece sheep in the Russian Federation has about 10,000 head. Kulundinskaya breed was taken into account the climatic conditions of the Siberian region, which gives it priority over other imported fine-fleeced breeds that are difficult to acclimatize in the northern regions

Due to the fact that this breed has not a long period of existence, it is recommended to breed it clean, to consolidate and improve the available productive qualities.
