Over the years, for the development of livestock, considerable attention has been paid to improving the meat breeds of cattle. The most common meat animals were European breeds. They were intensively bred to produce products with high quality properties and crossed to improve other breeds.
Meat-type cattle are more early, especially when weight gain occurs at a young age of animals. Meat of these breeds is more caloric and nutritious in comparison with meat of dairy breeds. Also animals of meat breeds serve as a source of reception of high-quality raw materials for manufacture of leather products. Dairy functions of cows are mainly limited to the fattening of young animals, which lasts until reaching the age of 8 months.
Place and history of excretion
In recent years, at the international level, the Italian breed of meat cows, called the Kiana, is gaining popularity. On the basis of the gene pool of this breed, new species of livestock, for example, Kiangus, have already been taken out.
Ancestors of cattle of the Kiana breed lived in Ancient Rome. Already then the first attempts of deliberate breeding were carried out. Local breeders by artificial selection gradually formed the breed for draft work with pronounced signs of meat direction.
Exterior and average weight
To date, the Kiana breed is probably the tallest of all existing breeds of cattle. The height of breeding bulls can reach 170 cm at the withers, and the live weight – 1300 kg. Known bull-recorder, who at the age of 8 had a weight of 1820 kg. The live weight of cows is somewhat lower and averages 700 kg. The weight of calves at birth usually ranges from 45 to 55 kg, but by the age of 18 months their mass is quite comparable with adult bulls of other breeds and is 800-900 kg. The average daily weight gain varies from 1 to 2 kg. Considerable weight of young animals at birth does not complicate calving, they pass easily thanks to a narrow head and a long trunk of calves.
Animals of the Kiana breed have a somewhat elongated body with well-developed muscles and strong straight limbs. Short horns are attached to the small head of the straight profile. The color of the animals is predominantly white, only occasionally in bulls the color of the anterior part can be gray. The nose and skin are usually black.
Features of the Kiana rock
In addition to the high growth and impressive mass of livestock, it is possible to distinguish a thin skeleton of animals from the features of the Kiana rock. Its specific gravity in the carcass is small and is about 15% in 18-month-old young. The strength of the breed can be attributed to the intensive growth of livestock in weight with the simultaneous saturation of meat with nutrients. A small but even distribution of fat inside the muscles and between them forms a valuable “marbling” of the meat product.
The minuses of the breed include the obstinacy of animals and their aggressive nature. Kicking, bodding and even jumping through fences, whose height exceeds 1 meter, is not uncommon.
Animals of the Kiana breed are resistant to various diseases, hardy and not too whimsical. Their content is possible in the premises without additional warming. Cows of this breed are not milked, and calves, which are on the suction for a long time, do not require special care. All these factors allow to reduce human and material costs in the production of beef based on this breed.
The Kiana breed of cattle was successfully used to produce meat in Ukraine. In Russia, the crossing of this breed did not give good results.
