Sheep animals are very useful and at the same time not too whimsical in content. They are able to graze both on semi-desert pastures and in mountainous terrain, they are hardy, and for their maintenance and feeding it does not require sophisticated efforts. Sheep products are wool, meat, milk and fat.
The content of sheep. Sheep are very obedient and with a developed herd instinct. No wonder there are many proverbs about the comparison with the sheep – how they walk one after another, unable to change direction even in case of danger. That is why it is recommended to graze sheep along with other animals that better memorize the terrain, for example, with goats.
In winter, the sheep need a warm room, but it is sufficiently ventilated, without drafts. It is advisable to equip the sheepfold for the winter from the middle of the autumn, not postponing this matter until the onset of cold weather: insulate the walls, equip the feeder, and think over the ventilation system. In winter, the temperature should not fall below 6 degrees in the room, and if the sheep are lambing, it is worth keeping the temperature at 15 degrees.
Feeding the sheep. Sheep can lower their head low, tearing away the smallest blade of grass, so they can graze even after other animals, such as cows. In the summer, with sheep feeding, there should be no problems if there is enough pasture around the paddock. Particular attention should be paid to winter feeding. In winter, forage will also suit coarse varieties, for example, hay, which should be stored from summer. Sometimes animals eat even dry leaves, which are recommended to be collected in autumn on the litter.
That the sheep were calm in the winter and did not disturb the owners, they should be fed 3-4 times a day, and it is better in the open air if there is no weather in the street. In addition to hay in the feed, you need to add root crops, silage, straw. It is recommended to feed the animals at the same time. Sheep-breeders require more careful care – they need to add oats, potatoes to the food, and hay to give the highest quality.
Lambs have to eat mother’s milk for the first week of life, which fully saturates their body with useful elements, and from the second to the third week, carrots, small hay and vitamins can be added to food. By the fourth month lambs can already be kept on separate pastures from the mother.
Shearing. In individual farms, semi-coarse-grained and coarse-wooled sheep breeds predominate. In the spring they can and should be cut, because if you do not do this, the wool will fall off by itself and become useless.
Special scissors for shearing sheep, animals are sheared, starting from the head, while slightly pulling the wool, but so that the animal does not get hurt. The back and sides are sheared last. With uterus should be very careful not to hurt the udder. The wool, which was removed with a whole fleece, is placed separately from the wool from the legs and abdomen. Next, the shaved material should be washed for better storage.
Health of sheep. The main rule of maintaining sheep in a healthy form is their proper feeding and maintenance. Animals must remain well-fed and receive all vitamins from food. In summer, sheep are disturbed by insects that not only bite them, but can also leave the infection in the wound. Therefore, your herd should be checked regularly for the presence of wounds, lubricate them with a disinfectant, preferably with iodine. Animals can not be beaten and pulled by wool, trying to catch or prunrunit – this can lead to bruises and pain in the animal, and ultimately – to reduce the productivity of the animal or a prolonged illness if the wounds are inflamed.
