The birthplace of Galloway cows is county of Galloway County, which is located in Scotland. This breed is considered one of the oldest, since the first mention of it appeared as early as the beginning of the 17th century. Galloways are due to the origin of aboriginal animal breeds, by the improvement of which this rock was excavated

The cows of this breed are perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions, since they are all year in grazing, because the winter in those parts is soft enough and practically without snow. Animals easily tolerate rainy and snowy weather, are not afraid of the wind. They are characterized by a good bone system and a fine wool coat. Due to these qualities, the representatives of this breed are popular in many countries of the globe

At the beginning of the 19th century, selection work was carried out to increase the speed of weight gain in animals, as well as to improve the quality of meat. From the second half of the 19th century Galloway bulls annually took part in auctions, which was caused by the increased attention to this breed. Since 1862, the tribal book of the breed begins its history, and in 1877, was organized by a society for the cultivation of Galloway. Formed in 1882 in Chicago, the Union of Breeders actively promoted the breeding of Galloways in the United States

At the moment, this breed is considered the main breed of cattle, which is grown in the UK and Scotland

By the appearance of representatives of Galloway breed can easily be attributed to the meat direction. They have, characteristic of these animals, a small head with a broad frontal lobe and small light horns. Wool is long with a fluffy undercoat, usually black or gray with a brownish tinge. The skeleton is strong, wide. The muscular system is perfectly developed. The height of these cows is about 130 cm. The chest circumference of the cow is 185-190 cm, the bull has 235-240 cm. Newborn calves weigh no more than 30 kg. However, at the end of the fattening period, their weight reaches 260-310 kg. The body weight gain of young animals per day is equal to 800-950 g. Galloway cows are beautiful mothers, do not cause trouble during calving and in the first days of the life of the offspring. On average, one cow per year gives 1500 kg. milk, with a mass fraction of fat 4.0%

Galloway animals have a good life expectancy and have excellent meat qualities. Meat is characterized by a lack of fatty layer

Galloway bulls are used for breeding on an industrial scale, since they have a high level of transfer of meat qualities to offspring. To this end, Galloways are exported to South and North America, South Africa and other African countries

In Russia, the total number of cows Galloway breed at the moment is about 0.7% of the total number of meat cows. This breed is cultivated only in several breeding farms in the central zone of our country.
