Feeding foals

Growing a healthy and strong horse from a colt is a serious and responsible task. The first year of life the foal is the most important, because it is during this period that the backbone, the muscular corset is formed, the necessary resources are created for the further use of the horse in sports and other physical activity

The basic role in growing a young horse is played by proper nutrition and a competently chosen diet. It is best to ensure the correct development of the foal in the womb of the mother, including in its diet all the necessary nutrients. But if there is no such possibility, and you have purchased the colt after his weaning from the mother, do not despair. Today there is a huge selection of a variety of useful feeds and fertilizing

From birth to 6 months, the foal feeds on the mother’s milk, receiving from it all that is necessary for the growing body. During this period, make sure that the mare receives only high-quality and nutritious food, because it depends on the quality of milk

When the foal turns six months old, it is gradually disaccustomed to the mother’s milk and moved to a separate stall. From this moment, the entire responsibility for the correct feeding and growing of the foal falls on your shoulders

To make a balanced diet, you need to use the highest quality feed: first of all, a good nutritional hay. It – the basis of any diet, and therefore, should not be dusty or moldy. The best is hay, which was harvested in June, when the grass is most nutritious and contains the maximum amount of vitamins

Formerly, for the feeding of hay, they used reptiles or wall cribs, but now special “slow” feeders are gaining great popularity, which ensure a uniform and unhurried eating of hay, which is more useful for digestion of horses. Another option for feeding hay is distributing it to the floor. In this case, dust and other small particles that can cause allergies or breathing problems do not enter the horse’s nasopharynx

In addition, in nature, horses graze, head down

In addition to roughage (hay), it is necessary to introduce in the diet concentrates, for example oats or special muesli for foals. Muesli costs a little more than ordinary oats, but they contain a balanced amount of nutrients and trace elements

At any time of the year it is advisable to add grass to the ration: in the summer it is necessary to provide access to pasture, and in the autumn-winter season, stock up with vitamin-grass flour

Year-round in the diet of the foal must be present vegetables, for example, carrots or apples. They can be used as a treat and encouragement, or add to muesli and oats

A large number of useful minerals and trace elements is contained in a special pressed salt, which also must be in constant access

During active growth, especially strong load is necessary for the musculoskeletal system of the foal, so the owner’s task is to help avoid developmental anomalies with the help of special fertilizing. There are many different options for additives for the prevention of joints, ligaments and bones
