Maintenance and care
Before purchasing sheep you should take care of the place of their maintenance, paddock, grazing and premises for storage of feed and necessary equipment.
The room for sheep, or the sheepfold, must be light, dry and warm. Sheep are afraid of drafts, and therefore, when building a shed, special attention should be paid to the insulation of the floor, ceiling and windows of the room. Sheep is best kept on clay, wood, or earthen floor, should avoid concrete and iron floors, lying on which sheep can easily catch cold.
Sheepfold should be equipped with a large number of windows and vents. Sheep need light sources around the clock, in addition, they need a constant supply of clean air, which they can get only through artificially organized ventilation, or through window openings. Windows in the sheepfold can not be glazed, in warm climatic zones, windows are blocked for the winter with polyethylene film, or forced with unnecessary rags, which makes it possible to use the window at any time as a vent.
The roof of the sheepfold should be flat, usually for its covering instead of slate, or tiles use reeds and stalks of corn. In the presence of an attic hole it must be insulated with straw or hay. Sheepfold should not run during rain, or melting snow, dampness is harmful to sheep as well as draft.
The floor in the sheep-house must be warmed with straw, the thicker its layer, the better.
Near the sheepfold there should be a corral where sheep could be driven out during the daytime, including in winter. The overtaking should be arranged so that sheep can be driven into even one sheep dog.
It is necessary to distinguish between such concepts as grazing and corral – in the corral the sheep may be at night or in bad weather, while the grazing animals are released solely in order to feed.
Sheep are herbivorous animals; nevertheless, they enjoy eating porridge, grain of cereals, slops, milk and other products with great pleasure. In summer, most of the sheep feed on the fodder, needing only a small feeding. For the winter for sheep it is necessary to prepare a large amount of hay, at a rate of not less than 100 kilograms per adult sheep. It should be noted that one sheep can not feed sheep, because farmers also harvest grain, flour, root crops and some concentrates.
