The black Tikhoretskaya breed of turkeys was bred in the 1950s by agricultural specialists of the Tikhoretsky district of the Krasnodar Territory as a result of selection of local turkeys with bronze and bronze broad-chested turkeys. Subsequently, for the subsequent crosses, only the best individuals obtained at the first crossing were used. For the first time this species was described in 1958 as a Kuban black breed. During its existence, the breed managed to spread across central and southern Russia, as well as in some CIS countries
This light type turkey breed has a black plumage with a shiny shade and a bronze tint in the tail area. The constitution is strong enough, the body is elongated, wide, the head is of medium size. A bundle of filiform feathers hangs straight down from the base of the neck, especially strongly visible in males. The beak is long, it is also wide enough. Birds are excessively mobile, adapt well to both pasture breeding and cellular conditions. But in any case, because of the great mobility, they need a fairly frequent paddock
The average weight of adults is 10-11 kilograms, females weigh about 5-6 kilograms. The yield of meat from this weight in adult birds reaches 60%. Young animals, reaching 17 weeks of age, weigh about 3-4 kilograms, while yielding meat of good quality for slaughter, but few chickens at such an early age, they are usually grown to adult status. On the deposition of fat and on the quality of meat, the black Tikhoretsky breed is superior to the North Caucasian and white broad-chested breeds
It has good resistance to stress, the turkeys have a well developed maternal instinct. During the season, it demolishes up to 80 eggs, which is the average among turkeys. The withdrawal of young animals from eggs is approximately 80%. Birds of this breed easily withstand cold, therefore, to stable frosts can safely live in unheated rooms. But it is better to create normal conditions for her, providing the bird with warmth and comfort
Unfortunately, the breed has received limited distribution and a relatively small number of livestock due to its greater fitness for the region in which it was bred. In production, it is not very competitive in connection with the massive production of turkeys-broilers. It is often used for selection breeding of new turkey species.
