Alpine goats are beautiful, noble animals, bred in the mountainous regions of the Alps several centuries ago. The breed is considered to be one of the oldest in the world, for a long time it was characteristic exclusively of Switzerland, where it was bred like meat and milk. Around the 20th century, Alpine goats began to breed in other regions of the world, foreign travelers took her to France and Italy, and in 1922 she got to the United States, where she became very popular with farmers who appreciated all the beneficial aspects of the breed, such as resistance to cold and heat, and also unpretentiousness in content and feeding. Gradually, as goats spread, British Alpine goats, Swiss alpine goats, French, American and mountainous began to emerge around the world.
It is not easy to find an Alpine goat among goats of other breeds, since it has practically no distinctive features. The color of the goat is light brown, black, brown, piebald and even white. The main feature of the breed, according to which the expert can nevertheless classify it, is a slight darkening around the head, legs and neck, the rest of the wool is light and does not stand out.
Alpine goats are large enough, but this does not in the least prevent them from moving quickly and gracefully. The goat’s body is strong, sinewy, the height of the goats at the withers is greater than 70 centimeters, and the goats 80. The alpine goat’s head is small, light, decorated with small straight horns. Commonly there are hornless goats, while goats are always decorated with horns. The ears of the goats are small, straight, standing, the neck is short, the chest is wide, the back is straight, the legs are short and very thin, especially in small kids. The hooves of the Alpine goats are firm above, which allows them to overcome painlessly sharp mountain slopes, but from the inside they are soft, which again contributes to movement in the terrain that is clogged with stones, since it does not allow the limbs to slip, acting also as a shock absorber.
The woolen coat of Alpine goats is small, there is very little in front and on the sides of the coat and it is short, but closer to the tail, the wool becomes larger, it lengthens noticeably.
Weigh an adult sexually mature alpine goat just over 60 kilograms, the weight of the goat can reach 75-80 kilograms. The breed refers to prolific, rarely in which litter there are less than 2 kids. Alpine goats are well milked and bring a large amount of milk, the specific weight of which can be 1200 kilograms for the entire lactation period. The lactation of goats lasts more than 9 months a year, the fat content of milk is 3-4%, its taste is very pleasant, tender and fragrant, but to fresh use it is still suitable, as farmers prefer to make from it the most delicious cheese, to realize which is more profitable and more expensive than fresh milk.
On good fodders, alpine goats gain weight quickly and at the slaughter show high meat productivity. The animals have a calm character, because they are quite suitable for herd breeding, without showing anything to each other, except for the egoism inherent in them.
In the herd, each goat lives apart, trying to take away from the other, as much as possible delicious and nutritious food, because often at the feeder you can see a picture of how one goat pushes the other away from it. But, despite this interesting circumstance, it is extremely profitable and efficient to breed goats, since it is absolutely not necessary to build special pens for them, equip a stable and provide them with some special food. The breed feels quite comfortable in any weather and lives well without supervision and care on the part of a person, so in case of losing such a goat, it will not have to be searched for, it will either come to the herd itself, or become a savage and will live in freedom.
